Unless you've been over to ODR to visit Jeff and just happened to notice the 2009 Rhens MTB Marathon certificate hanging on the wall behind his desk, you'd never know we actually went to this race. We waited a few hours for those certificates not because we finished the race in record time, but becaus

Thanks to all of you who came out for the first Spangdalem Bicycle Swap Meet and Movie night. It was a lot of fun and we got to see a few new faces. We had a great turn out and got to watch "Race Across the Sky" on the Brick House entertainment system. Mr. Heagerty from Spandalem Outdoor Recreation did

What better way to spend a Saturday morning, than to get up at 3 in the morning and drive to Belgium! After years of Jack trying to talk us into the cyclo Sportif realm, we
finally caved. It was a rainy day and
the Sabers drove 2.5 hours to Ninove, Belgium to partici

I went to the Poison Bike Cup race in Boos today. The right Boos this time, by the way. It's out near Daun and the Vulkaneifel was pretty much summarized in this short course. Like the other local races we have done this series is fairly

I was the lone Saber at Wiesbaden today. There was not a huge turnout for this one, but it was interesting. The course was somewhere in the neighborhood of 1200m per lap and it had basically two features -- uphill and downhill. The kids went out first and the Overfield children clea…

On Saturday August 15, 33 riders from Germany, Italy, Belgium and Luxembourg made the trip to Spangdahlem Air Force Base to test themselves on the 50 kilometer course against the best in USAFE. It was an unusually sunny day with temps in the 80's when racers lined up for the start at…

The Sabers switched gears this weekend for some mid-season cross-training. Spangdahlem Air Base Fitness Center hosted a duathlon this past Saturday and six Sabers took up the challenge to try something new. The duathlon format was a 5km run-30km bike-5km run. The weather report called for a cool, rainy day, but the weather held off and it was overcast and in the 70’s. Most of us, not being runners, took an easy pace at the beginning. Martin and Dan were the exceptions and took a commanding lead…

Schlaflos im Sattel is hard to explain to anyone who has not been there. This 3-day event is unlike anything ever seen and done and every year it amazes us that so many people are willing to suffer for a blue collar workday, at night. Friday the Sportzplatz in Weidenthal fills with camp…

Last year Jeff and I went to this event last minute and were able to ride. This year 1200 people signed up and the event organizers shut down registration early, so jump on it early next year. I did the 65 km course this year which included 1700 m of climbing. It was really soggy fro…

So, who is the "Lemans" guy and why did he have the idea to run to a working bike instead of just riding from the start? This and many other themes will be discussed at great length in this weeks edition of "The Saber Race Blog." Or maybe not. This is the 3rd year for the Sabe…
